Hi! My name is Lindbergh. We are Hitotsubashi Advertisement Strategy Club (HASC). We are going to tell you about the reality of Hitotsubashi University. Reading this makes you imagine how your student life in Hit-U would be and understand how poorly a Japanese student, in a relatively good university, uses English.

Basic Information

ADDRESS: 2-1, Naka, Kunitachi-city, Tokyo-to, 186-0004
FOUNDED: in1875, National
FACULTIES: Commerce and Management, Economics, Law, Social Sciences (Sociology), Social Data Science
QS World University Rankings 2025: 539th
Hit-U is highly evaluated by students but not so famous generally in Japan because of its specialization in the field of social sciences. And the number of undergraduate students is not so large: about 4300.

As of May 1, 2024, 337 foreign undergraduate students are in Hit-U, nearly half of them are from China or Korea. But I see many students who seem to be from North America, Europe, etc. Students from anywhere would enjoy the student life!
Language
Foreign students may worry about the language.
First, Japanese is used in almost all classes. Some seminar classes and courses of Hitotsubashi University Global Education Program (HGP) are done in English.
For foreigners, some lectures of Japanese are offered. They are separated into six levels. And now there are a lot of translation apps available. Please do not worry too much!

Campus Life
I’m going to introduce a standard student’s (=my) schedule.
10:30 AM: Wake up
I live in Arakawa, 1 hour and 30 minutes distant from Hit-U. I wake up this time to attend 3rd period which starts from 1:15 PM.
11:00 AM: Eat brunch
I have rarely met anyone who eats breakfast when they are going to attend only classes that start in the afternoon. Japanese students (or maybe only me) usually eat stir-fried vegetables on the rice and instant miso soup at such time.
12:00 PM-1:00 PM: on Train
While going on a train, I watch videos of on-demand classes and submit reaction comments of them. The nearest station from Hit-U is Kunitachi station, about 10 minutes away on foot. From Kunitachi station you can ride JR Chuo Line which takes you to Kichijoji, Shinjuku, Tokyo station, etc.
Hit-U is often expressed as frontier-located. Surely it is more or less distant from the urban area, so some people may find that inconvenient.

1:15 PM-5:00 PM: Attend classes
Class Schedule
8:45 AM-10:30 AM: 1st period
10:45 AM-12:30 PM: 2nd period
1:15 PM-3:00 PM: 3rd period
3:15 PM-5:00 PM: 4th period
5:10PM-6:55 PM: 5th period
(7:45 PM-9:30 PM: 6th period for some live stream classes)
If you don’t like to take morning classes, you should choose 3rd and 4th period classes, like most of us.
A class is 105 minutes. It’s relatively longer than other universities’.

6:00 PM-9:00 PM: Wonderful time
When I could luckily meet one of my few friends at classes or somewhere, we go to an izakaya, a Japanese pub, and then drink until going to a toilet five times, while talking about nasty topics, such as never having had girlfriends since birth, not being able to attend 3rd period because of oversleeping, losing two months’ wages by trading stocks, etc. What a wonderful time we had! Around Kunitachi station, there are some good izakayas and restaurants, but not so many. Students sometimes go to eat to other places by train. Even so, you won’t have trouble finding places for dinner as long as you are in Tokyo!

11:00 PM-1:00 AM: Homework
For me night is the best time to do my homework. And the deadlines of most of them are set at 11:59 PM, so this time students often do homework, or write reports at the end of each semester. Japanese students (or maybe only me) can’t help but look at posts on X, so it is not so rare that the tasks are not done in expected time.
Closing
How was the introduction of Hit-U? Actually, information above is never enough; there are a lot of club activities, fantastic festivals, and of course great classes! If you want to find more information, check the official website or contact the international students support group!
